CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia right-handed pitcher Tyler Wilson (Sr., Midlothian, Va.) has been named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for baseball. Wilson is one of 10 national finalists for the award.

Majoring in biology, Wilson has twice been named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll. He also is a six-time member of the school’s athletics honor roll and has been a Dean’s List honoree. Wilson is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars as well as the Phi Eta Sigma honor fraternity. After his playing career, Wilson plans to enter medical school and become an orthopedic surgeon.

On the field, Wilson has a 4-0 record with a 2.63 ERA in nine starts this season. In 54.2 innings, he has allowed just 16 earned runs, 40 hits and 15 walks while striking out 66. Wilson was a go-to member of the Virginia bullpen the past two seasons while helping the Cavaliers to school-record victories totals in 2009 (49) and 2010 (51). He has pitched in 81 career games (fourth in school history) and owns 21 career victories, which also is tied for fourth in school history.

Wilson was drafted in the 35th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, but chose to return to school for his senior season to earn his degree.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website (seniorclassaward.com) or on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through June 5. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches’ votes to determine the winner.

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner June 24 at the NCAA College World Series® in Omaha.
