RADFORD, Va. -The Virginia softball team (21-27) was swept in a doubleheader at Radford (33-15) Wednesday, falling 1-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second game. Freshman Marcy Bowdren was 3-for-3 at the plate in game two while classmate Erica Cipolloni homered for the team’s lone run.

In the first game, Radford scored in the first for an early lead and the game’s only run. Chelsea Kelley and Kellie Snooks combined for the shutout; Kelley earned the win and Snooks the save.

Virginia’s Melanie Mitchell tossed a complete game, allowing the one earned run on seven hits. She also fanned eight.

Leading the Cavaliers at the plate in game one was freshman Stephanie Harris, who tallied a double. Alison Pittman, Alex Skinkis, Taylor Williams and Bowdren also singled.

In game two, it was Virginia who scored first, putting up a run in the first inning when Cipolloni hit her second home run of the year.

The Highlanders then put up five unanswered runs, scoring in the second, third, fourth, and two in the sixth.

Stephanie Dameron got the win in the second game for Radford. She did not start but came on to throw the final 2 1/3 innings. Snooks, who started, tallied three strikeouts.

Junior Stephanie Coates took the loss for the Cavaliers. She threw all six innings.

UVa was outhit in the second game, 12-7. Bowdren finished with two singles and a double to pace the offense. Junior Kennedy Byxbee also tallied two singles.

Virginia will conclude Atlantic Coast Conference play at NC State this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and close the series at 12 p.m. Sunday in Raleigh, N.C.
