Foley Wins IC4A Title in 10,000m

PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Chris Foley led the Virginia track and field team on the opening day of the ECAC/IC4A Championships Friday by winning the IC4A title in the 10,000m. The Chantilly, Va., native won his first collegiate title in a personal-best time of 30:04.09. That mark ranks second in Virginia’s freshman record books, trailing just Bobby Thiele’s freshman record of 29:58.29 set in 1998.

Virginia also had two other Cavaliers earn personal-best times on the day, while junior Erin Wykoff finished runner-up in the discus. Wykoff threw 158′ 4″, just three inches shy of Connecticut’s Tynisha McMillian’s winning throw of 158′ 7″.

Junior Anna Corrigan turned in a personal-best performance in the 5000m, crossing in 16:34.31 to finish fifth. In the men’s steeplechase, freshman Colin Mearns completed the race in his best time of 9:05.92, moving closer to John Hinton’s freshman record of 8:58.21 from 1982.

Virginia will return to action tomorrow. Events at Princeton will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the Cavaliers will also compete at the Carolina Relays. Events in Chapel Hill, N.C., are scheduled to begin at 8:45 p.m.
