CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia catcher John Hicks (Jr., Sandy Hook, Va.) has been named one of 13 national semifinalists for the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, announced Thursday by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. Finalists will be announced June 6, and the award will be presented June 30.

Hicks has played in all 51 games for the Cavaliers this season, including 40 starts behind the plate. He is batting .361, which ranks fourth in the ACC, and has 75 hits, which is second in the conference. Hicks also ranks fourth in doubles (19), fifth in total bases (111) and ninth in RBI (47).

He owns a team-high 25 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games this year.

He continues to move up the UVa career charts as well. Hicks currently owns 228 career hits and 153 runs – each stands 10th in UVa history. He is tied for fourth in Virginia history with 52 doubles; he needs one double to match Brandon Guyer (2005-07) for third.
