CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field team will send 24 Cavaliers to the 2011 NCAA East Preliminary Round at Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind., on May 26-28. Virginia will be featured in 18 different events throughout the three days with the top-12 finishers of each event advancing to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

On the men’s side, Virginia qualified 13 Cavaliers in eight events, including three in the 800m and 3000m steeplechase, while the women will send 11 competitors in 10 events.

Senior ACC Champion Stephanie Garcia will lead the way for the women, as she currently holds the top-ranked time in the region in the 3000m steeplechase (9:55.10). Virginia will also have three men compete in the event, senior Andrew Mearns (26th – 9:56.41), junior Andrew Revelle (46th – 9:02.58) and freshman Colin Mearns (48th – 9:03.92).

Four competitors will represent Virginia in the 800m – senior All-American Lyndsay Harper, junior All-American Lance Roller, sophomore All-American Robby Andrews and 2011 ACC Champion Anthony Kostelac. Kostelac leads the way with the 13th-best time among the regional competitors – 1:49.02. Andrews enters the meet ranked 17th with a time of 1:49.30, while Roller is 19th (1:49.44). Harper holds the 30th-best time entering the competition, as she ran 2:07.44 at UNC last weekend.

Three Cavaliers will compete in the 1500m – junior All-American Morgane Gay, senior John Minen and sophomore Brett Johnson. Gay is ranked eighth in the region with a time of 4:17.74, while Johnson is 14th on the men’s side (3:44.44) and Minen is 24th (3:45.65).

Two Cavaliers will compete in the 400m hurdles, 10,000m, high jump, hammer throw and javelin, while senior All-American Adams Abdulrazaaq will run the 110m hurdles (12th – 13.82), junior Erin Wykoff will throw the discus (27th – 163′ 4″) and sophomore Emily Vannoy will compete in the shot put (35th – 49′ 7.75″).

In the 400m hurdles, senior All-American Ayla Smith is ranked seventh with a time of 57.42 and senior Kristina Chapman is 34th with a time of 59.61. Junior Anna Corrigan is 25th in the 10k with a time of 34:45.80, while freshman Chris Foley is 44th on the men’s side, running 30:04.09.

Senior Greg Nelson (39th – 6′ 10.75″) and sophomore Pearl Bickersteth (30th – 5′ 8.75″) will compete in the high jump, while juniors Vincenzo Chiariello, Andy Fahringer, Tara Karin and Maureen Laffan will all compete in the throws.

Fahringer is ranked seventh in the javelin with a mark of 239′ 7″, while Karin is 27th on the women’s side with a throw of 148′ 11″. Chiariello ranks 25th in the hammer (198′ 11) and Laffan is 21st (191′ 0″).

The top-12 finishers in each event will join the top-12 finishers from the NCAA West Preliminary Round to form the field of 24 that will compete at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11.
