UVa Women's Golfers Finish Fourth at NCAA Championships

Bryan, TX – The Virginia women’s golf team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships, the best showing in the program’s history. The Cavaliers shot 8-over 296 during Saturday’s final round for a 72-hole total of 34-over 1186 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
UCLA won the team championship at 21-over 1173 while 2010 NCAA champion Purdue was second at 1177. LSU placed third at 1181. USC, which entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat rankings, finished fifth, four shots behind the Cavaliers.
Virginia’s previous best finish at the NCAA Championships was an eighth-place effort in 2009 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. This year’s appearance at the NCAA Championships was the fifth in the eight-year history of the program.
The Cavaliers were led by the 12th-place performance of sophomore Brittany Altomare. She shot 2-over 74 Saturday for a four-day total of 2-over 290. Last season Altomare placed 15th at the tournament.
Freshman Portland Rosen had her best round of the tournament, shooting even par 72, to post UVa’s best score Saturday. Rosen started her day by recording consecutive bogeys but then settled down to post three birdies, a bogey and 12 pars. She finished in 102nd place at 313.
Sophomore Nicole Agnello used a strong front nine to shoot 1-over 73 during the final round. Agnello collected four birdies over a six-hole stretch to make the turn at 2-under. She moved up to 37th on the leader board at 11-over 299
Seniors Calle Nielson and Joy Kim capped their collegiate careers with their fourth straight NCAA Championship appearance. Nielson shot 5-over 77 during the final round and placed 26th at 9-over 297. Kim carded a score of 7-over 79 to wrap up play in 95th place at 311.
LSU’s Austin Ernst shot 6-under 66 for the second time during the tournament to win the NCAA individual title at 7-under 281. Arkansas’ Kelli Shean was second at 284.
