CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s lacrosse placed three Cavaliers on the 2011 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. Rob Emery (undeclared), Patrick Harbeson (undeclared) and Brian McDermott (history) were honored on the team.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

McDermott (Cortland, N.Y.) graduated with a history degree in May 2010 and spent the 2010-11 academic year working on a master of education in higher education administration. Hurt in 2009, McDermott was granted a fifth year of eligibility for UVa’s 2011 NCAA title run. He appeared in 16 games as one of UVa’s three-headed monster at faceoff. McDermott won 64-of-131 face-offs. His 265 career wins rank No. 9 all-time in the UVa annals.

Emery (San Francisco, Calif.) made Inside Lacrosse‘s second team all-freshman squad after appearing all 18 games, including starting on the first midfield through UVa’s NCAA Tournament run to the title. He scored 13 goals and assisted seven during his freshman campaign.

Harbeson (Annapolis, Md.) played in nine of UVa’s 18 games, including running on the second midfield during Virginia’s final five games. He scored one goal and assisted another during his first season on Grounds.

The academic awards are the first career for all three Cavaliers.
