Women's Soccer Tops George Mason 5-0 in Preseason Finale

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 10 Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its preseason schedule with a 5-0 exhibition win over George Mason Monday morning at Klöckner Stadium. The match had been scheduled for Sunday night but was moved to Monday morning due to inclement weather.
The Cavaliers dominated the first half, scoring all five goals before intermission. Five different players scored for Virginia, who outshot the Patriots 24-2 in the contest.
“We saw some good things, especially in the first half,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We are scoring a lot of goals, which is a positive. We were also a little inconsistent. I thought we lost focus at times and we need to be careful of that. We are improving with each day and there were signs of that today from Friday’s game [vs. Notre Dame]. Now, we have a few days to prepare for a tough opener Friday against West Virginia.”
Virginia took the lead in the 13th minute of play when Erica Hollenberg (Fairfax Station, Va.) found an open Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) on the flank, who dribbled into the box and slotted a shot past the keeper. Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) doubled the lead in the 25th minute when a ball deflected to her at the top of the area and she blasted in her third goal of the preseason. Amber Fry (Northfield, Ill.) scored her second goal of the preseason just 40 seconds later to make the score 3-0. Fry drew a penalty kick in the 35th minute as her shot hit the hands of a Patriot defender and Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) converted the kick for a 4-0 advantage. Gloria Douglas (Fayetteville, N.C.) completed the scoring in the 39th minute as she scored off an assist from Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.). Virginia ended the half outshooting George Mason 16-0.
The teams played a scoreless second half. Cavalier goalkeepers Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) and Churchill O’Connell (McLean, Va.) each played a half in net.
The Cavaliers open the season on Friday as they host No. 13 West Virginia. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium and it is the second game of a soccer doubleheader. The Virginia men’s team concludes its preseason schedule as it hosts George Mason in the first game at 5 p.m.

The 2011 All-Soccer Reserved Season Pass (reserved seats for all home men’s and women’s games) is $90. Reserved Season Passes for Men’s Soccer or Women’s Soccer only are $50. General Admission All-Soccer Season Passes are also available for adults ($40), Youth/Senior ($30) and Faculty/Staff ($30).
Packages and single game tickets are also on sale. The Friday Night Lights packages, featuring a general admission ticket to the men’s soccer games vs. Charlotte, North Carolina and Maryland, is available for $15. The ACC Rivalry package is available for women’s games, featuring Maryland, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Single game tickets are available for all home games starting at $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff.
