SAN FRANCISCO — Former Virginia women’s soccer player Nikki Krzysik was honored as the Citi Sportswoman of the Year as Women’s Professional Soccer announced its 2011 awards on Wednesday. Kryzsik, a defender who played at Virginia from 2005-08, is the captain of the Philadelphia Independence.

Krzysik was described as a “prototype team player, super likeable character and superb leader,” by Philadelphia head coach Paul Riley. She played all 1,620 minutes of the 2011 season for the Independence, leading them to a second place finish during the regular season.

The Independence will host MagicJack in the super semifinals this weekend, with the winner advancing to meet the Western New York Flash in the championship game.
