CHARLOTTESVILLE – After nearly two weeks of preseason practice, the Virginia volleyball team puts its hard work on display for Cavalier fans, holding a successful Orange and Blue Scrimmage at Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday (Aug. 20).

The Cavaliers broke up into different teams for each set to try out various line-ups for the season, and the Blue squad won the first set, 27-25, before the Orange team battled back to win the second, 25-17.

The Blue team was victorious in sets three (26-24) and four (25-21) before falling in the fifth set, 15-10.

Senior Simone Asque led all players with 21 kills on the day. Sophomore Rachel Clark added 19 kills through five sets.

Sophomore Mallory Woolridge was a force at the net, posting a team-high nine blocks while contributing 14 kills.

Seeing their first collegiate action, freshmen Tori Janowski (nine kills, 11 assists, seven blocks), Abbey Welborn (22 digs), Morgan Blair (two kills, six digs) and Sydney Shelton (24 digs) all had impressive outings.

Following the scrimmage, fans lined up for autographs from the team and the program hosted a youth clinic.

The scrimmage was the Cavaliers’ lone tune-up before the regular season gets underway next weekend. The Cavaliers begin the 2011 campaign with back-to-back tournaments in Mem Gym. The Marriott Cavalier Classic (Aug. 26-27) features Western Michigan, USC Upstate and Western Carolina, while the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup (Sept. 2-3) features East Carolina, California and Long Island.
