CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Penn State 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers fall to 6-1-1 overall, while the Nittany Lions improve to 6-2-0.

“It was an interesting game,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “It is hard to assess our performance. We started well, and then we let them back into the game, twice. Their first and third goals were against the run of play and a result of our errors. The loss doesn’t sit well with us, but it is certainly a chance to learn from our mistakes.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Morgan Brian’s (St. Simons Island, Ga.) shot was saved, but the rebound came right to Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.), who tapped in her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Penn State answered in the 13th minute, as Maya Hayes headed in a cross from Maddy Evans. The Nittany Lions took the lead in the 22nd minute as Taylor Schram’s shot snuck just inside the post. The Cavaliers drew even in the 30th minute as Brian scored her third goal of the season on a breakaway set up by Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.). The game remained tied a 2-2 at the half.

Penn State got the only goal of the second half in the 66th minute, as Hayes one-timed a cross for her second goal of the game, her 12th of the season.

Virginia outshot Penn State 17-11 and had a 5-4 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves for the Cavaliers, while Erin McNulty made seven saves for the Nittany Lions.

In the first game of the final day of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic on Sunday, UCF topped Washington State 2-0 to capture the tournament title.

Virginia opens ACC play on Thursday as it hosts No. 3 Maryland. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 7 p.m. The game will be webcast at VirginiaSports.com.
