Q&A with Sarah Weber

Redshirt freshman Sarah Weber and the No. 17 Virginia field hockey team concludes its seven-game road trip with two more non-conference matchups this weekend in Chicago. The Cavaliers will face California at 1 p.m. Saturday before battling Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both games will be played on Northwestern’s campus in Evanston, Ill. Weber, a native of Moorestown, N.J., sat down with VirginiaSports.com to talk about scoring her first career goal, the upcoming trip to Chicago and what she likes to do for fun.

Question: What was it like to score your first career goal last week vs. JMU?
Weber: It felt great. It was a great contribution to the team.

Question: Did redshirting your first year in 2010 prove to be helpful?
Weber: It helped a lot watching last year and knowing what to do and where to be. I was able to see and learn what I needed to do to help the team.

Question: How would you describe the season so far?
Weber: It’s been a rollercoaster because we have had ups and downs. But we’re getting back on track this week and going back at it. Traveling has been somewhat hard but we just have to deal with it. These last couple days off have really helped. We will be refreshed and ready to go.

Question: How would you describe the team chemistry this season?
Weber: It’s been different but it’s been good. We are gelling more as a team. We spend a lot of time together – especially since we have been on a lot of buses and planes. But we’re getting to know each other and everyone is coming out of their shell.

Question: What are you looking to see from California and Northwestern this weekend?
Weber: It’s going to be a new experience; I have never been to Chicago before. It will be good to see some other teams who we don’t face every year and to see how we match up.

Question: What would you say are the team’s strengths and weaknesses as this point?
Weber: Our strengths are our defense and our overall team capabilities. But our weaknesses are putting it out on the field and doing what we need to do for a full 70 minutes.

Question: How have you developed as a player from where you were a year ago?
Weber: I have become a lot more confident in myself. Last year I was a lot more conservative and didn’t really show a lot of myself. This year is a lot different and that is a good thing.

Question: What made you want to come to UVa?
Weber: The great academics and athletics for sure. I loved the campus and the historical side of it.

Question: What is your major?
Weber: I haven’t declared a major yet but I am thinking education and maybe getting into the Curry School. I would like to maybe get into special ed and/or English.

Question: What do you like to do for fun?
Weber: Hang out with friends and watch movies. I like outdoor activities. I live at the beach in the summer so we go water skiing and I sailed competitively for about 10 years.
