UVa Championship Squads Invited to Governor's Executive Mansion

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 2011 Virginia men’s lacrosse team will be honored by Governor and Mrs. Robert F. McDonnell at the Executive Mansion in Richmond on Thursday, Sept. 22, to honor its 2011 NCAA title. UVa’s College World Series participating baseball squad, who also won the ACC, will also be honored. Members of the UVa’s men’s tennis team, which finished No. 2 in the country in 2011, will also be on hand as well as track & field’s Robby Andrews, who won the national title in the 800 meters.

“It is very gracious of Governor McDonnell to recognize our 2011 Championship and invite us to the state house,” said Virginia head coach Dom Starsia. “It will be good to see some of our graduated players back and it will be an educational experience for everyone involved. We have been looking forward to this trip since it was first scheduled. We are very appreciative.”

Virginia won its fifth NCAA title in May and became the first five-loss team and lowest seed to win the entire thing. The event is closed to the public.

“It is an honor for our 2011 baseball team to be recognized by the governor,” said Virginia head baseball coach Brian O’Connor. “We are very proud of our accomplishments last season and we are looking forward to this special event.”

UVa baseball set a program record with 56 wins and made its second all-time appearance to the College World Series, while also winning the ACC title for the second time in three seasons.

UVa’s women’s golf and field hockey teams were also invited but will be unable to attend due to competition. Swimming’s Matt McLean was also invited for winning the national title in the 500 freestyle, but due to training in California will be unable to attend.
