Cavaliers Suffer 5-3 Defeat at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 18 Virginia field hockey team (4-5) suffered a 5-3 defeat at Northwestern Sunday in Evanston, Ill. Freshman Kelsey LeBlanc and sophomore Lane Smith each notched their first career goals for the Cavaliers in the loss.
Northwestern, coming back from a two goal deficit, moved to 7-2 on the year. Chelsea Armstrong recorded a hat trick in the win for the Wildcats.
Virginia outshot Northwestern 12-11, including a 7-3 advantage in the first half. Northwestern, however, registered 11 penalty corners, scoring on two of them. The Cavaliers finished with seven corners.
UVa took an early lead in the first half, scoring in the third minute. LeBlanc tallied her first goal in a Cavalier uniform from about 12 yards out on an assist from senior Alexandra Jahnle. Then in the 23rd minute, Smith recorded her first career score, connecting on a shot from 10 yards out. Sophomore Carissa Vittese assisted on the play.
Northwestern got on the board just before halftime, scoring with 55 seconds to play. Armstrong scored on an assist from Morgan Joffe, her first in a string of three consecutive goals. Virginia led at the break, 2-1.
Armstrong notched her second goal 51 seconds into the second stanza on a Northwestern penalty corner. Her third goal came seven minutes later, on another corner, to give the Wildcats a 3-2 advantage.
Nikki Parsley put NU up 4-2 with a goal in the 44th minute. Then, sophomore Katie Robinson acquired her first goal of the season in the 49th minute, bringing the Cavaliers within one. Classmate Elly Buckley assisted on Robinson’s goal.
Regan Mooney rounded out the scoring for Northwestern three minutes later to build on the lead, 5-3.
Northwestern’s Maddy Carpenter finished with four saves in the cage. Virginia’s Jenny Johnstone recorded three saves in 44 minutes of time. Senior Adrienne Ostroff played the final 26 minutes and recorded one save; freshman Maddie DeCerbo also had a defensive save for the Cavaliers.
Virginia returns home to the University Hall Turf Field Friday for the ACC opener against Boston College. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
