RALEIGH, N.C. – Morgan Brian’s (St. Simons Island, Ga.) golden goal in the 100th minute gave Virginia a 1-0 overtime win at NC State Thursday night. It was the Cavaliers’ third overtime win in ACC play this season as they improved to 10-3-2 overall (4-2-1 ACC). The Wolfpack fell to 9-5-2 (0-4-2 ACC).
“Obviously we are happy with the result,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “I thought NC State was very good and very organized. This is a tough place to come play and it is difficult to get wins here. It was a little bit of a different game than we have been playing recently as there wasn’t as much space for us to play. I don’t think it was our best performance, and give NC State credit for that, but we were able to get the result.”
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Virginia having a 6-2 advantage in shots. The Cavaliers had even more of the run of play in the second half, outshooting the Wolfpack 7-0, but couldn’t get the go-ahead goal. The best chance came in the 75th minute as NC State goalkeeper Kim Kern made a diving save to deny Caroline Miller (Rockville, Md.).
The Cavaliers scored the game-winner in the final minute of the first overtime. Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.) slipped a through ball to Brian, who dribbled around Kern and placed her shot into the vacated net.
Virginia outshot NC State 16-2 for the game, holding the Wolfpack without a shot for the final 60 minutes of the game. The Cavaliers also had a 5-2 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made two saves to post her seventh shutout of the season, the 40th of her career. Kern made six saves for the NC State.
The Cavaliers return home for a three-game homestand to close out the regular season, beginning Sunday against Clemson. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is 1 p.m.
