San Martin, CA – The Virginia men’s golf team shot even par 355 and is in third place after the opening round of play at The Gifford Collegiate in San Martin, Calif. The tournament features a play-six, count-five format at the par 71, 7,360-yard CordeValle Golf Club.

Southern California grabbed the early lead at 10-under 345 while host UCLA is second at 348. The Cavaliers are four strokes ahead of No. 3 Washington and seven shots ahead of No. 2 Oregon.

Ben Kohles paced Virginia by shooting 3-under 68. He is tied for fifth place following the opening round. Freshmen Denny McCarthy and Ji Soo Park carded rounds of 70 and are tied for ninth. Bruce Woodall is in 20th place at 72 while Ben Rusch is 41st at 75 and Mac McLaughlin is 50th at 76.

UCLA’s Patrick Cantlay shot 8-under 63 to grab the early lead for medalist honors.

The second round of the tournament will take place Tuesday with the final round slated for Wednesday. Virginia will be paired with Washington in the second round and will start play at 8:48 a.m. PT.
