CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – John Dineen headed home the golden goal with 4:14 remaining in double overtime to lift Delaware to a 1-0 victory over the Virginia men’s soccer team Thursday evening in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament at Klöckner Stadium.

Making its 31st straight NCAA tournament appearance, Virginia finishes the year with a 12-8-1 record, while Delaware (13-5-4) advances to face No. 13 seed UCLA in a second-round game Sunday in Los Angeles. UVa’s stretch is the longest active streak in the nation.

“The game was relatively even,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “I think we had a little more possession but the game was relatively even. They were very organized and an experienced team. We had four freshmen starting out there and it showed. There was a confidence in that team coming out of the CAA Championship and the run they’re on makes them a tough team to deal with.”

UVa out-shot Delaware, 17-16, and owned a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Virginia goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) made four saves for the Cavaliers, while Delaware keeper Kris Devaux made three saves.

After an uneventful first half, the game opened up in the second half, with the teams combining for 22 shots in back-and-forth action. UVa had a couple of shots from short range that sailed high, while Brian Ownby (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) cracked a shot that trickled just wide past the far post in the 75th minute. Delaware’s Evans Frimpong hit the post in the 71st minute.

The Blue Hens broke the deadlock in double overtime. After a free kick, Dineen headed the ball to the left side of the goal, over an outstretched LaCivita.

The loss marked the final game for seniors Greg Monaco (Virginia Beach, Va.), Mike Volk (Bear, Del.), Hunter Jumper (Plano, Texas), Felipe Libreros (Oldsmar, Fla.) and Ownby.
