HONOLULU – Virginia concluded action at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 59-50 loss to California. Senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) was the Cavaliers’ leading scorer with 15 points and also added nine rebounds.

With the loss, Virginia’s record went to 5-2, while the win improved Cal’s record to 4-2.

“I was proud of the team,” Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle said. “Going into the locker room at halftime being down against a great team, we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy comeback. But we fought and I was proud of the team for that. We cut the lead to one point at the six-minute mark and I was happy with the intensity and the run, but we didn’t do certain things down the stretch to win that game.”

Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored in double figures for the fifth-consecutive game, netting 13 in addition to her five rebounds. China Crosby (New York, N.Y.) was the third Cavalier in double figures for scoring – she finished with 11 points and a team-high four assists.

Moorer was named to the all-tournament team.

Virginia shot 19-for-61 (.311) from the field, including 2-of-14 (.143) from behind the 3-point line. The Cavaliers were out-rebounded by the Golden Bears, 47-28.

For Cal, Layshia Clarendon led all scorers with 16 points and tallied a double-double by adding 11 rebounds.

In the first half, with the score tied at 5-5 with 16:11 remaining, Cal went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-7 lead on a free throw by Clarendon at the 10:43 mark.

UVa cut the lead to three, 14-11, on a free throw by Moorer, but Cal closed out the half by out-scoring the Cavaliers 16-7 and led 30-18 at halftime.

Virginia chipped away at the Bears’ lead and eventually pulled to within one, 42-41, on a jumper by Shine with 6:33 remaining in the game. Cal responded with back-to-back baskets, however, and the Cavaliers did not get closer down the stretch.

Boyle was the head coach at California from 2005-11 before assuming her current position at UVa.

Virginia hosts Indiana on Thursday (Dec. 1) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip-off at John Paul Jones Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
