LYNCHBURG, Va.-The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2011-12 indoor season Friday (Dec. 2) with the first day of the Liberty Kick-Off at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.

Senior Maureen Laffan (Toms River, N.J.) opened her season strong, winning the women’s weight throw with a throw of 17.74m (58’2.5″), the second-best mark in school history.

Fellow senior Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) earned bronze in the same event, throwing 16.89m (55’5″) on her final attempt, while freshman Logan Clements (Swarthmore, Pa.) placed ninth with a mark of 13.64m (44’9″), also on her final throw.

In the heptathlon, freshman Christian Lavorgna (Sparta, N.J.) and sophomore Alex Mulchandani (Potomac, Md.) have 2,123 and 2,043 points, respectively, after four events.

The action continues Saturday (Dec. 3) at 9:30 a.m., and is the final day of Cavalier competition for 2011.
