Virginia's 4x800 Relay Recognized as Nation's Best in 2011
SAN ANTONIO, Texas-The Virginia men’s track and field 4×800-meter relay was among the nation’s best collegiate relays recognized by Accusplit Tuesday morning (Dec. 13) at the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) annual convention.
The squad of Brett Johnson (Ocean City, N.J.), Lance Roller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Anthony Kostelac (Charlottesville, Va.) and Robby Andrews (Englishtown, N.J.) set the pace on April 30 when UVa won the Penn Relays Championship of America for the second straight year in a time of 7:12.15.
In addition to being the nation’s best time, the Cavaliers set the second-fastest time in the 117-year history of the Penn Relays and broke the school record by over two seconds (7:14.59 in 1981).
Johnson earned Second-Team All-America honors in the 1500-meter run in 2011.
Roller won the ACC Championship in the 800m run in 2010 and finished sixth at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Kostelac was named the ACC Freshman of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor seasons after winning the 800m at both conference meets.
Andrews was named the 2011 Penn Relays’ Athlete of the Meet for Relay Events and went on to capture the NCAA title in the 800m at the 2011 national meet, his second individual crown after winning the 800m at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.
