Postgame Quotes

Virginia Head Coach Joanne Boyle
On calling the first timeout after trailing 8-0:

“We talked about going into the game focused, kind of shaking off finals and I think we came out and played at a pace instead of setting the pace. I called timeout and we regrouped and Lexie came in and hit some big shots for us early, and we settled down and went on a roll.”

On the creative passing:
“When you get in a rhythm and you’re winning I think you’re willing to take more risk. In the second half I felt like they played loose and with playing loose sometimes it gets to be a little bit fun.”

On coming back after a long break:
“The good thing about the break is that we were able to work a lot on ourselves and get ready for future games, and the ACC, you don’t get a lot of time to do that so it was a great week for us to do that. You’re not in uniform with lights on and so to be able and come out and for about 35 minutes play really good basketball. It’s great for us to be able to do that going into a really tough game on Tuesday against JMU.”

On the play of Lexie Gerson:
“Lexie is just very focused, she does great job. She played that last two minutes of that game as she did the first two. She comes in and flies around, she understands angles, she’s long, she might not end up with eight steals but she’s probably getting eight to 10 tips a game. She covers a lot of ground for us and just makes it difficult for people to see. I think she forces a lot of good stuff for us on the defensive end. Offensively she’s been able to translate, she’s calm and knocks her shot down, gets other people open and is very unselfish. It’s really good to see deeper into the season and she really has become our sixth man off the bench.”

Virginia Junior Guard Lexie Gerson
On the break between games:

“It’s amazing. We had 10 days to prepare. I personally had five days where I didn’t have finals. I was getting in the gym a lot and having fun. It was really awesome to get out there again.”

On team’s response to 8-0 Radford run at the start of the game:
“We just called a quick timeout and regrouped. We got together and started playing team ball. We just kept it rolling from there.”

On Virginia’s 55 bench points:
“Like Coach Boyle said, when you go on a run and you get on a roll, you’re going to keep having fun and people are going to keep passing the ball, sharing the ball. We had a lot of bench points.”

On the Cavaliers’ defensive effort:
“We pride ourselves on our defense. We try to hold teams generally to 55 points. It’s awesome to have that defense and then be successful on the offensive end. We’ve been struggling with that for a little bit so it was awesome having both ends of the court be successful for us today.”

On her improvement this season:
“I’m a lot more confident this year with the new staff just because they have a lot of confidence in me. It helps me be more confident. For this game, I had a lot of days to get in the gym because school’s over.”

On the upcoming game against James Madison on Tuesday:
“I can’t wait to play JMU again, but I’m going to approach it the way I approach every other game. I’m really excited. We played really well last year against them until the last five minutes. I’m just really excited to get another chance at them. It’s another opportunity to get better.”
