CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s basketball team hosts the 2011 Marriott Cavalier Classic at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday (Dec. 28) and Thursday (Dec. 29). The schedule is as follows: Elon vs. UMass (Dec. 28, 4:30 p.m.), Virginia vs. Wagner (Dec. 28, 7 p.m.), Elon or UMass vs. Wagner (Dec. 29, 4:30 p.m.), Elon or UMass vs. Virginia (Dec. 29, 7 p.m.).

Virginia (10-2) is coming off of a 59-53 victory over its fourth-consecutive in-state opponent, James Madison, on Dec. 20. The Cavaliers have won five-straight games and are undefeated at home this season (7-0).

Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge,Va.) has a 10-game double-digit scoring streak and is leading the team in scoring (11.9 points per game). Sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) exploded offensively against JMU for a career-high 22 points and is second on the squad at 11.0 points per game.

Senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) is averaging 9.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding by averaging 6.7 rebounds per game.

Wagner (2-9) is coming off of an overtime loss to New Hampshire (73-72) at home on Dec. 21. The Seahawks are led by Kelly Clark (13.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg).

Virginia leads the all-time series with Wagner, 1-0. The sole meeting between the programs was on Dec. 20, 2003 and resulted in a 87-53 UVa victory in Charlottesville.

Elon (5-5) most recently defeated Wofford, 74-68, on Dec. 19 in Spartanburg, S.C. The Phoenix’ Ali Ford averages 16.8 points per game as the team’s leading scorer. Elon’s head coach is former Atlantic Coast Conference standout Charlotte Smith (North Carolina).

UMass (4-8) defeated Siena, 58-53, on Dec. 21 in its last outing. Jasmine Watson (12.1 ppg) and Shakia Robinson (11.9 ppg) lead the Minutewomen in scoring.

Following the Marriott Cavalier Classic, Virginia begins ACC play on the road at Duke on Jan. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
