CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia first-year Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) begins the spring season ranked No. 1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, as the organization released its preseason rankings. Frank is one of three Cavaliers ranked in singles, and Virginia opens the 2012 season at No. 2 in the team rankings.

Frank, who won both the ITA All-American and ITA National Indoor singles titles in the fall, becomes the fourth player in program history to earn a No. 1 national singles ranking. He joins Somdev Devvarman (2007, 2008), Sanam Singh (2010) and teammate Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), who was the No. 1 player in this year’s fall rankings.

Joining Frank in the singles rankings are junior Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) at No. 11 and sophomore Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) at No. 57, as both players earned their career-high ranking. Two Cavaliers who were in the top 25 of the fall singles rankings, No. 1 Domijan and No. 21 Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) are not currently ranked in the ITA top 125 after missing most of the fall season due to injury.

Virginia had four teams ranked in the ITA doubles rankings. The team of Philippe Oudshoorn (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) and Shane are a career-high No. 15. Courtney and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) are No. 29, while Jenkins and Uriguen are No. 32. Courtney and Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) enter the spring at No. 49.

The Cavaliers open the spring season ranked No. 2 nationally, behind reigning NCAA Champion USC. It marks the fourth time in the past five years that Virginia has began the season ranked in the top two.

Virginia will begin the 2012 season on January 22 as it faces No. 46 USF in Miami.
