PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Two members of the Virginia women’s tennis team opened play Friday at the National College Tennis Classic. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) both advanced to the quarterfinals of singles during the first round of play.

Fraser, the tournament’s top seed had a first round bye before topping Julia Wiegand of Texas 6-0, 6-1 in the second round. Xi defeated Cierra Gaytan-Leach of Texas in the first round, 6-0, 6-4 and Gabi DeSimone of USC 6-4, 6-3 in the second round.

Fraser and Xi are the top seeds in doubles and will begin play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The event features players from Virginia, Fresno State, Texas, Baylor, UC Irvine, USC and Stanford.
