GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Virginia softball team (6-2) rebounded after two losses Friday to grab two wins on Saturday as the Pirate Clash continued in Greenville, N.C. The Cavaliers beat Hofstra 7-2 before earning a 6-4 victory in a rematch with Fordham.

In game one against Hofstra (0-2), The Cavaliers put up six runs in the bottom of the third to cruise to a win. Junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits. She also finished with eight strikeouts.

Senior Alexa Martinez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) doubled for the Cavaliers while Giannina Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) both singled twice.

In the game two against Fordham (2-2), Virginia collected 13 hits and scored in the first three innings en route to a victory. Freshman Rachel Gillen (Wilmington, Del.) started the game and went 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs of five hits. Mitchell came on to throw the next 3 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit over that span.

Sophomore Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two doubles and three RBI in the win. Cipolloni, Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) and Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) all contributed a pair of hits.

Virginia concludes play at East Carolina’s Pirate Classic at 11 a.m. Sunday against UNC Greensboro.
