Georgetown, SC – Ben Kohles had his second top-five finish of the week to help the 24th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team to a fifth-place showing Monday at the 15-team General Hackler Championship in Georgetown, S.C. Kohles shot 1-under 70 for the second consecutive day to finish tied for second at 2-over 215, three shots behind the tournament champion.

Virginia finished with a 54-hole score of 34-over 886. North Florida, ranked No. 14, won the tournament by two shots with a score of 872. East Carolina was second at 874 followed by ninth-ranked Arkansas at 878 and No. 19 New Mexico at 879. The Cavaliers shot 12-over 296 Monday and finished three shots better than two-time defending NCAA Champion Augusta State.

Kohles had rounds of 75, 70 and 70 during the two-day event. Earlier in the week he took medalist honors at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. Kohles’ finish is the 21st top-10 performance of his career. He trails Simon Cooke and James Driscoll, the school’s all-time leaders, by two in that category.

Freshman Denny McCarthy had another solid outing for the Cavaliers, shooting 74 Monday to close out the tournament in 18th place at 222. Ben Rusch was 30th at 225 after shooting 75 during the final round. Bruce Woodall was 40th at 227 including a final round of 79. Ji Soo Park shot 77 over the final 18 holes to move up to 45th with a score of 229. Gregor Orlando, playing as a non-scoring individual, was 54th at 232. He shot 74 during the final round.

The Cavaliers travel to Georgia this weekend for the Schenkel Invitational that takes places March 16-18 in Statesboro.
