CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) has been tabbed the Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Mitchell had two complete game outings to pick up her ninth and 10th wins of the season as Virginia swept Georgia Tech on the road over the weekend. She struck out 11 batters in game one of the series while allowing just three hits, and struck out five more in game three. On the weekend, she limited the Yellow Jackets to a .182 average and finished with a 1.00 ERA in 14 innings of work.

The Cavaliers halted Georgia Tech’s conference winning streak at 25 consecutive series. It was the first time the Yellow Jackets had been swept since April 2008 and the first series sweep for Virginia over GT since the 2001 season.

It is the first weekly award for UVa this season and the third career pitcher of the week accolade for Mitchell. She was honored twice as a freshman during the 2010 season.

The Cavaliers, receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls this week, travel to Fullerton, Calif., for five games in the Judi Garmen Classic. Virginia opens the tournament at 9 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Eastern) vs. UC Davis.
