Cavalier Women's Tennis Falls at No. 9 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 15 Virginia women’s tennis team began a two-match road trip to Florida with a 6-1 loss at No. 9 Miami on Friday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Cavaliers fell to 15-6 overall, 6-4 in the ACC, with the loss, while the Hurricanes improved to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
Miami took a 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. Gabriela Mejia and Lina Lilekite gave the Hurricanes an early edge with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.). The Cavaliers drew even as Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) downed Liat Zimmerman and Melissa Bolivar 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The opening point came down to the match at No. 3, where Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins defeated Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) 8-5 to give Miami the lead.
Early in singles play the match was delayed over four hours due to rain. When play resumed, the Hurricanes doubled their lead as Lilekite topped Tomljanovic 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot. The lead was extended to 3-0 as Bolivar downed Peretz 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Bartenstein clinched the Miami victory with her 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Fraser. Virginia got on the board as Vierra rallied from dropping the first set for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Zimmerman at No. 4. Mejia edged Hardenbergh in the third-set match-tiebreaker at No. 1 and Dubins topped Fuccillo 7-5, 7-6 at No. 6 to close out the match for a 6-1 Miami win.
The Cavaliers conclude the regular season on Sunday as they visit Florida State, Match time in Tallahassee is 11 a.m.
