New London, NC – The No. 20 Virginia men’s golf team remained in second place after the second round of the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers shot 9-under 279 for a two-day total of 21-under 555. UVa trails No. 11 Georgia Tech by 11 shots. The Yellow Jackets shot 14-under 274 Saturday and have a two-day total of 32-under 544. Florida State is in third place, four shots behind the Cavaliers.

Freshman Denny McCarthy had a stellar round to lead the Cavaliers with a 7-under 65 that vaulted him into a tie for second place at 8-under 136. It was his best single-round score of the season. McCarthy opened his round with an eagle on the par-5 No. 1 hole. Thanks to six birdies and a bogey over a 10-hole stretch, he improved to 7-under where he finished the day.

Ben Rusch produced his second under-par round, shooting 2-under 70 to stand fifth after 36 holes at 7-under 137. Ben Kohles dropped back to 11th place after shooting 72. He enters the final round at 5-under 139.

Bruce Woodall and Ji So Park are tied for 37th place at 2-over 146. Woodall carded a 72 Saturday while Park shot 75.

Georgia Tech’s Richard Werenski will take a one-shot lead into the final round at 9-under 135.

The tournament continues Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Virginia’s golfers will start play at 11:10 a.m. Sunday and will be paired with Florida State and Georgia Tech. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.

TheACC.com will broadcast a free webcast of the final round with coverage starting at 1:30 p.m. Rain and cooler temperatures are expected during Sunday’s play.
