Karasek Tabbed ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia senior David Karasek (Meisterschwanden, Switzerland) has been named the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced Wednesday by commissioner John Swofford. Additionally, 11 women and five men joined Karasek as members of the All-ACC Academic Teams.
A graduate student studying professional development, Karasek won titles at the 2012 ACC Championships in the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle, setting a new Virginia school record in the 200 IM. Also a member of the victorious Cavalier 800 freestyle relay, Karasek finished his career with five ACC individual event titles and was a member of four team championships.
At the national level, Karasek earned All-America honors on Virginia’s fourth-place 800 freestyle relay as well as honorable mention accolades as a member of the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. He was an All-American in the 200 freestyle with his seventh-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. An eight-time All-American, Karasek swam at the NCAA Championships four times in his career and is expected to represent his native Switzerland at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Karasek is the first Virginia’s men’s swimmer to win the award since PJ Sullivan did so in 2008.
Additionally, Taylor Grey, Nathan Hart, Briggy Imbriglia, David Ingraham and J.B. Kolod joined Karasek on the All-ACC Academic Team. Both Grey and Imbriglia earned spots on the squad for the second time and Karasek was selected for the third time.
The Virginia women were represented by 11 student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team: Shaun Casey, Charlotte Clarke, Emily Dicus, Kelly Flynn, Alison Haulsee, Emily Lloyd, Kelly Offutt, Christine Olson, Lauren Perdue, Erika Stewart and Ellen Williamson.
Flynn, a recipient of the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarship, was named to the team for the third consecutive year. Lloyd, Olson and Perdue were each selected for a second time.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
