CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference second team, the league office announced Thursday.

Mitchell’s 1.39 ERA during the regular season ranked second among ACC pitchers (21st nationally) and her 273 strikeouts were third in the league (11th nationally). She has allowed just 25 walks on the year, the fewest among starters in the league, and her 0.85 walks per seven innings is the sixth-lowest nationally.

With her next start, Mitchell will tie the Virginia program record for career starts in the circle. Former Cavalier Lisa Palmer (1986-89) currently holds that mark with 112 career starts. Mitchell also ranks second in strikeouts (826), third in innings pitched (719.0), third in complete games (78) and fourth in wins (63) in UVa’s career lists.

It is the second career honor for Mitchell, who was a first-team honoree as a freshman in 2010.

Virginia (26-24, 8-13 ACC) earned the No. 6 seed in the 2012 ACC Championship and faces No. 3 seed Georgia Tech at 12 p.m. Thursday at North Carolina’s Anderson Stadium. The matchup will be televised live by the ACC’s Regional Sports Network and live statistics will be linked on VirginiaSports.com.
