Boylston, Mass. – Rising Virginia senior Brittany Altomare won the 2012 Massachusetts Women’s Open yesterday at Mount Pleasant Country Club by two shots. Altomare shot 7-under 141 on the par-74 course. A native of Shrewsbury, Mass., Altomare opened the tournament with a round of 4-under 70 and followed that up with a 3-under 71.

“I hit the ball a lot better and hit my irons a lot better, which was something I wasn’t doing (on Wednesday),” Altomare told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. “”I was getting my shots closer to the greens, which helped with my scoring.

“It was nice to shoot under-par rounds. I hadn’t done that yet this year, which was really kind of frustrating. It was nice to come home after being away (at school) for so long. It was nice to see everyone.”

Altomare, qualified for her third U.S. Women’s Open last week and will play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championships in two weeks.
