OMAHA, Neb. –

Former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean (Sterling, Va.) placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle while rising senior Lauren Perdue (Greenville, N.C.) earned a berth in the 200-meter freestyle final Wednesday night as the United States Olympic Swimming Trials continued from the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

McLean’s fifth-place finish gives him a likely spot as an alternate on the 2012 Olympic Team, though that announcement will officially be made Monday (July 2) following the conclusion of the meet. A 15-time All-American during his time at Virginia, McLean touched the wall in 1:46.78.

Perdue, in the second heat of the 200-meter freestyle semifinal, finished in 1:58.28 to remain the seventh seed heading in the event final Thursday night. The top four finishers in the event earn spots on the U.S. Olympic Team. Perdue missed the NCAA Championships in March to undergo a surgical procedure on her back; she is a 12-time All-American and 17-time ACC champion in her first three seasons at Virginia, as well as the ACC record holder in the 200-yard freestyle.

Rising sophomore Sarah White (Norfolk, Va.) moved onto the semifinals of the 200-meter individual medley and earned a 15th-place finish in 2:16.42. Out of prelims, she posted a time of 2:15.32 to earn a return swim. White won the ACC title in the 200-yard individual medley as a freshman in 2012 and also earned all-conference honors in the 200-yard butterfly.

Day four of Olympic Trials continues Thursday morning with preliminaries in the men’s 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter breaststroke and the women’s 200-meter butterfly.
