LONDON – Former Virginia women’s soccer player Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007) won an Olympic gold medal on Thursday as she and the United States Women’s National Team defeated Japan in the final 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. Sauerbrunn is the third Cavalier to win gold at the London Games, joining swimmers Matt McLean and Lauren Perdue.

Sauerbrunn becomes the second Cavalier soccer player to win a Olympic gold medal, joing Angela Hucles (Class of 2000), who was a member of the 2004 and 2008 U.S. gold medal squads.

At the London Olympics, Sauerbrunn made three appearances off the bench for the Americans, including substitute appearances in both the semifinal victory over Canada and the final against Japan.

Sauerbrunn has made 30 career appearances for the United States Women’s National Team and was a member of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup runner-up squad.
