CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team was picked fifth in the ACC in the annual preseason poll of the league’s coaches.

Duke, the 2011 NCAA Runner-Up was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the conference, receiving 10 of the 11 first place votes. They were followed by fellow 2011 NCAA College Cup teams Wake Forest and Florida State. North Carolina, Virginia, Boston College, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State and Clemson round out the poll.

Duke (No. 2), Wake Forest (No. 3), Florida State (No. 4), Virginia (No. 7) and North Carolina (No. 8) received preseason national rankings by the NSCAA. In total, eight ACC squads were ranked in the preseason NSCAA poll with Boston College (No. 11), Maryland (No. 13) and Virginia Tech (No. 22) also selected.

The Cavaliers open their preseason schedule Friday afternoon against at Notre Dame. They return home to host Georgetown in an exhibition Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia opens the regular season on Aug. 17 as it hosts Penn State at 7 p.m.
