CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team has its final tuneup for the 2012 regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to Liberty at Klöckner Stadium. Admission is free for the contest.

The Cavaliers start the regular season next Friday (Aug. 24) when they battle Georgetown in the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.

Virginia opened exhibition play Tuesday evening with a 1-0 victory over No. 15 St. John’s at Klöckner Stadium. The match was called in the 82nd minute because of lightning. Virginia freshman Brian James (Sunrise, Fla.) scored the game’s lone goal in the 48th minute.

Head coach George Gelnovatch is leading the Cavaliers’ program for the 17th season. He heads a talented, but very young squad; 21 of the 27 players on the roster are in their freshman or sophomore years of eligibility. Virginia has just two seniors on the roster, Will Bates (Sr., Chester, Va.) and Ari Dimas (R-Sr., Chesapeake, Va.); the two were the lone upperclassmen in the starting lineup Tuesday. UVa’s starting lineup featured four freshmen, five sophomores and two seniors.

Liberty returns seven of its 11 starters and 14 players from the 2011 squad which captured the Big South title. The Flames finished the year with the program’s fifth consecutive double-digit victory campaign, posting an 11-6-3 mark. Liberty has been picked fourth in the preseason Big South coaches poll.
