CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team recorded its first win of the season, downing Radford 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (1-1) had five different goal scorers in the game as they handed the Highlanders (1-1) their first defeat of the season.
The Cavaliers were led offensively by first-year Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.), who had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Kaili Torres(Fleming Island, Fla.) added a goal and assist for her first career three-point game.
“You are always glad to get the result, and it was nice to score some goals,” said assistant coach Ron Raab. “We made some better decisions today than we did Friday (in the loss to Penn State), and that contributed to finding the back of the net five times. We still aren’t clicking on all cylinders yet, but that isn’t overly surprising for this point in the season. We just need to continue to improved with each game.”
Virginia took the lead in the 17th minute of play. Erica Hollenberg’s (Fairfax Station, Va.) cross was deflected by Torres to Kate Norbo (Roanoke, Va.), who slotted home her first goal of the year. The lead was doubled in the 24th minute as a failed Radford clearance resulted in Doniak gathering a loose ball 10 yards out and firing her second goal of the season into the vacated net. Doniak set up the third goal in the 31st minute as she threaded a ball onto the run of Gloria Douglas(Fayetteville, N.C.), who notched her first goal of the year. Virginia took that 3-0 advantage into halftime.
The Cavaliers extended their lead early in the second half. In the 48th minute a Doniak cross came to Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) at the top of the box, who one-timed in her first goal of the season. Torres closed out the scoring in the 76th minute when she was set up in front of goal by Mary Morgan(Norfolk, Va.), who recorded her first career point with the assist.
Virginia outshot Radford 25-6 in the contest and had a 5-1 corner kick edge. Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.), Churchill O’Connell (McLean. Va.) and Carrie Wisman(Bristol, Va.) combined for the shutout in goal for the Cavaliers. Che’ Brown made three saves in goal for Radford.
The Cavaliers continue their season-opening four-game homestand on Wednesday as they host Liberty. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
