CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 8 Virginia women’s soccer team concludes its season-opening four-game homestand Sunday as it hosts UNC Wilmington. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 2 p.m., and the first 500 fans will receive the first series of 2012 Virginia women’s soccer trading cards.
Tickets are $7 for adult general admission and $5 for youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission. Group tickets (20 or more) are $4. Sunday’s game is also the women’s soccer camp reunion. 2012 Virginia women’s soccer campers receive the group ticket rate of $4 to the UNC Wilmington game if they are wearing their camp T-shirt to the game.
The Cavaliers enter the game with a 2-1 record. After a season-opening loss to then-No. 8 Penn State, Virginia has posted consecutive shutout wins over Radford (5-0) and Liberty (3-0).
UNC Wilmington is 0-1-1 this season and is playing its third consecutive game against ACC competition. The Seahawks opened the year at the Virginia Tech tournament where they lost 1-0 in double overtime to the Hokies and played a scoreless draw with Wake Forest.
Virginia is led offensively by first-year Makenzy Doniak(Chino Hills, Calif.), who has scored an ACC-high four goals this season. She is just the second Cavalier in history to score a goal in each of her first three career games, joining Kristen DiMillio, who accomplished the feat in 1992.
Sunday’s game is the first meeting between Virginia and UNC Wilmington in women’s soccer. The Seahawks are the only first-time opponent on the Cavaliers’ 2012 schedule.
The Cavaliers make their first road trip of the regular season next week as they travel to Austin, Texas, for the Longhorn Invitational. Virginia plays host Texas on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT in a game televised on the Longhorn Network. The Cavaliers play SMU on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT on the second day of the tournament.
