2012 UVa Football Legends' Walk Inductees Announced

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia athletics department announced today the jerseys of former Cavalier greats D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Heath Miller, and Matt Schaub will be retired during the 2012 season. The trio of players will also be honored with plaques on Legends’ Walk in the north end of Scott Stadium.
Ferguson and Schaub will be honored at halftime of Virginia’s 2012 opening game against Richmond at Scott Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
Ferguson, a current member of the New York Jets, finished his career as one of the most decorated offensive linemen in school history. He was named a first-team All-American as a senior in 2005 and was an All-ACC pick as both a junior and senior. He started all 49 games in which he played, setting a record for the most by a lineman in school history.
Schaub was named ACC Offensive and Player of the Year in 2002. The former Cavalier signal caller finished his career with 22 school records, including the marks for career yards passing, touchdown passes, completions, attempts, completion percentage, 300-yard games, and 200-yard games. Schaub is currently the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans.
Miller will be honored at halftime of Virginia’s home game against Maryland on Oct. 13. Miller rewrote the UVa and ACC record books during a stellar three-year career He recorded 144 receptions for 1,703 yards and 20 touchdowns, all records for a tight end. He capped his UVa career in 2004 by winning the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end, becoming Virginia’s first major award winner since 1941. He became the second unanimous All-American in school history (Jim Dombrowski, 1985).
With the additions of Ferguson, Miller, and Schaub, there will be a total of 22 retired jersey honorees. A total of six Virginia football players have had their number retired. It was previously announced the late Dr. Frank C. McCue III will be honored on Legends’ Walk, joining former head football coaches Art Guepe and George Welsh as the only non-football players enshrined as Virginia Legends.
