CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team competed in two matches Saturday (Sept.1) in the final day of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup at Memorial Gymnasium. In the first match, the Cavaliers (3-3) defeated Lehigh, 3-0, before going on to sweep Delaware, 3-0.

“I felt that we had some good points last night (against Western Kentucky), had some good points today, but we still have some things to work on,“ UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “For us to go 2-1 this weekend and be at .500, we have a lot of momentum going into next weekend. Today was a good day for Virginia volleyball.”

In the first match, the Cavaliers hit 14 more kills (40-26) and earned eight more blocks (10-2) than the Mountain Hawks on their way to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 win.

The Mountain Hawks were led by Ana Vrhel, who earned eight kills and no errors.

After a fairly even first set in which the Cavaliers prevailed 25-21, UVa held Lehigh to a -.100 hitting percentage and used a 9-2 run in the middle of the frame to win the second set, 25-19.

In the third, Virginia scored eight out of the first 10 points and hit .483 with only one error en route to a 25-14 win.

In the night cap, the Cavaliers hit .311 and earned 18 more kills than the Blue Hens (48-30) in a 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 win.

UVa was led by senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas), who hit .500 with 10 kills and four blocks and freshman Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.), who served up five aces. Two other first-years, Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) and Burcescu, hit .423 with 12 kills and .308 with seven kills, respectively. Rottman led the squad with 21 digs.

In the first set, the Cavaliers jumped out to an 12-5 lead, converting on their first five hitting attempts, on the way to a 25-15 win. UVa hit .350 and Bausback recorded four service aces in the frame.

The second set ended up being tight with ties at 22 and 23, but kills from O’Shoney and Searsclinched the win for UVa, 25-23.

Delaware (1-4) jumped out an 8-2 lead in the third, but Virginia answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Cavaliers had 20 kills in the set, including Sears, who had three kills in UVa’s last four points to finish off the set, 25-18.
