Cavaliers Roll Past James Madison 4-1 For Seventh Straight Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team used a three-goal surge over the final 25 minutes to down James Madison 4-1 Sunday in the final game of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic at Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (7-1) extended their win streak to seven games, their longest streak since 2004, and won their tournament for the 15th time in 25 years. The Dukes fell to 2-4 overall with the loss.

Sophomore midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) had a goal and an assist and senior midfielder Julia Roberts (Frederick, Md.) had two assists as four different Cavaliers scored on the afternoon.

“It was a great weekend as we got two wins to wrap up the non-conference schedule,” said assistant coach Ron Raab. “JMU gave us a battle today and we expected that. It got a little interesting early in the second half when they tied it up, but we were able to raise our level and finish some chances to put the game away.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead into halftime as Colaprico scored in the 18th minute. Roberts found her open in the middle of the field and Colaprico took several touches before firing a shot from 20 yards out into the upper corner for her third goal of the season.

The Dukes answered to tie the game early in the second half with a goal in the 51st minute. Madyson Brown slipped a through ball to Kate Menzie who fired a shot that clipped the inside of the near post and in for her first goal of the season.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the Cavaliers retook the lead for good in the 66th minute. After a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) at the far post. Her first shot attempt hit off a defender’s arm and as she was scoring on the rebound chance, the official called a penalty kick for the handball. Doniak stepped to the spot and slotted home the penalty kick for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Virginia extended the lead to 3-1 in the 79th minute on Gloria Douglas’ (Fayetteville, N.C.) second goal of the season. After a give-and-go with Roberts, Colaprico slid a through ball to Douglas, who beat the charging keeper to the ball and poked it past her into the vacated net.

Kate Norbo (Roanoke, Va.) closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute as she headed in a corner kick from Amber Fry (Northfield, Ill.) for her second goal of the season.

“In the second half, after they tied it, we realized that we needed to work harder and move the ball quicker to break down their defense,” said Colaprico. “We were able to do a better job of that towards the end of the game and scored some good goals to get the win.”

Virginia outshot James Madison 18-10 in the contest and had a 7-3 corner kick edge. Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) made two saves in the first half and Churchill O’Connell (McLean, Va.) made one save in the second half in goal for Virginia. JMU goalkeeper Ellen Forrest made six saves at the other end.

The Cavaliers, who defeated George Mason 3-0 on Friday, won the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic for the fifth time in the past six years. Defender Molly Menchel (Alexandria, Va.), who had her first career two-goal game on Friday, was named tournament MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Colaprico, Roberts and Olivia Brannon (Troy, Mich.)

Virginia enters the ACC season with a 7-1 record, their best non-conference record since going undefeated (8-0) against non-conference opponents in 2004.

The ACC season begins Thursday as Virginia welcomes NC State to Klöckner Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be televised live by FOX Soccer Channel.
