Franklin, Tenn. – After winning his first tournament of the season, Virginia sophomore men’s golfer Denny McCarthy found himself back at the top of the leaderboard following the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championship. The 54-hole tournament is taking place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

McCarthy shot 4-under 67 to hold a one stroke lead after Friday’s first round. He posted five birdies and a single bogey during his round. McCarthy’s score was the lowest during his college career.

Virginia finished the round tied for 12th after shooting 12-over 296. Oklahoma leads the field at 4-under 280.

UVa’s other scores included a 72 by David Pastore in his first collegiate tournament. He is in in 25th place. Ji Soo Park shot 78 and is in 75th place. Gregor Orlando shot 79 and is 78th. Kyle Kochevar shot 86 and is in 84th place.

The second round of the tournament is set for Saturday and the final round will be played Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
