Virginia Drops Four Set Match to No. 15 Florida State, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia volleyball team won the first set Saturday night (Sept. 22), but fell to No. 15 Florida State, 25-23, 14-25, 17-25, 12-25, at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Seminoles (10-2, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) hit .414 and recorded 62 kills and 13 blocks to the Cavaliers’ (5-8, 0-3 ACC) 47 kills and five blocks.
“It was a good first set because we did some things and we served tough,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We knew they were a very physical team and that Miami and Florida State are probably the two best teams in the conference. It was good for the first-years to see what the top teams look like and we’ll learn from this. We did some good things this weekend and we’re getting better every weekend and that’s all I ask every week. We’ll be ready to go Thursday night.”
Senior Jessica O’Shoney (Houston, Texas) led UVa with 14 kills and a .448 hitting percentage, while sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) tallied nine kills, 20 assists and 12 digs.
Florida State led the first set, 23-22, but Virginia came back with a kill by O’Shoney followed by a service ace by freshman Manon Greskovics-Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and a Seminole blocking error to win the frame, 25-23.
In the second set, FSU hit .625 with 16 kills and used a 9-2 run to win, 25-14. With the score tied at nine in the third, the Seminoles went on a 9-1 run and went on to win 25-17.
In the fourth, FSU hit .467 with 16 kills, while holding Virginia to a .057 hitting percentage en route to a 25-12 win.
Fatma Yildirim and Ashley Neff led Florida State, combining for 28 kills and no errors.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Boston College on Thursday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m., before competing at Maryland on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.
