2013 Schedule

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head women’s lacrosse coach Julie Myers announced her team’s schedule for the 2013 season today. The schedule features at least eight home games and contests against seven opponents that played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

“We are really excited about our 2013 schedule and playing many of the top-15 teams in the country,” Myers said. “Our home games will be exciting to watch and challenging to win as we face five NCAA tournament teams at Klöckner. The expansion of our NCAA bracket (from 16 to 26 teams) will add incentive along the way as we work towards earning the right to host a postseason games in May.”

The Cavaliers begin the 2013 slate with three-consecutive road games, opening the season at Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Cavaliers will play a midweek game on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Richmond before heading to New York to take on 2012 national runner-up Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Virginia will play its home opener at Klöckner Stadium on Friday, March 1, beginning ACC competition with a game against Maryland, a 2012 NCAA Tournament semifinalist. The Cavaliers play two more NCAA Tournament teams, Penn State at home (March 3) and North Carolina in Chapel Hill (March 9) as they start the season facing five 2012 postseason participants in the first six games.

The Cavaliers will play non-conference home games against William & Mary (March 13) and Princeton (March 16) and a road game at James Madison (March 20) before returning to ACC action by hosting Duke on Saturday, March 23.

After three straight road contests at Old Dominion (March 27), Boston College (March 30) and American (April 2), the Cavaliers will host Northwestern, the 2011 and 2012 NCAA champions, at Klöckner Stadium on Monday, April 8.

The Cavaliers close out the regular season with home games against John Hopkins (April 11) and Virginia Tech (April 17).

Ticket information and television and web streaming selections will be released at a later time.

The ACC Tournament will be held April 25-28 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The NCAA Tournament runs from May 10-26. This season, the NCAA Tournament field will feature 26 teams with all 13 conference champions receiving an automatic qualification into the field. The remaining 13 teams will be at-large selections. Last season, the bracket consisted of 16 teams. The top eight teams will be seeded in the bracket and will host first- and second-round games. The top six seeded teams will receive byes into the second round and serve as hosts for a neutral-site first-round game May 10. The first-round winners then play at the top-six seeded teams May 12. The teams seeded seventh and eighth will also host, but they will have to play a first-round game May 10.

The quarterfinals are at campus sites May 18 or 19, with the four winners advancing to the finals May 24-26.
