COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 3 Virginia women’s soccer team had its 10-game unbeaten streak snapped Thursday night as No. 10 Maryland scored three goals over the final 17 minutes for a 3-1 come-from-behind victory at Ludwig Field. The Cavaliers fall to 9-2-1 overall (2-1-1 ACC) with the loss, while the Terrapins (8-2-2, 4-0-1) remain unbeaten in ACC play.

“A game like this is just the nature of our conference,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Maryland is a good team; they are athletic and they work very hard. These are the type of games we know we are going to face the rest of the way.”

The first half saw few chances, but the Cavaliers took advantage of one in the 41st minute to take the 1-0 lead. Danielle Colaprico’s (Freehold, N.J.) cross deflected to Kaili Torres (Fleming Island, Fla.) in the middle of the box. She collected the ball and slotted home her third goal of the season to give Virginia an advantage it would take into halftime.

Virginia held the 1-0 advantage for most of the second half before Maryland’s late three-goal rally. The Terrapins drew even in the 74th minute on Olivia Wagner’s first goal of the evening. Wagner took a free kick from about 40 yards out and her service into the box deflected off a Cavalier defender and went into the opposite side of the net. Wagner struck again 11 minutes later on another free kick. After a handball on Virginia just outside the area, Wagner blasted a 20-yard free kick into the net for her second goal of the evening. As the Cavaliers pushed forward looking for a late equalizer, Maryland took advantage of a counter-attack that produced Danielle Hubka’s goal in the 87th minute.

“Maryland is very opportunistic,” said Swanson. “We had our handle on the game. We had some chances to put them away, or at least go up by two goals and really put the pressure on them. We let them hang around and they get a freaky goal off a restart that gets them back into it and then we are scrambling. Give Maryland credit, they hung in there and fought hard, but we need to do a better job of finishing off a game with a late lead.”

The Cavaliers outshot the Terrapins 15-9 and had a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) made two saves in goal for Virginia, while Rachelle Beanlands made three saves at the other end for Maryland.

The game marked the first time since 2007 that the Cavaliers lost a game in which they led after the 60th minute of play.

Virginia returns home to host No. 5 Duke on Sunday. Game time at Klöckner Stadium was moved to 2 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPNU.
