CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia football team will wear a special Retro Game uniform for its home game against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Sept. 29. The game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. The Nike uniforms are modeled after those worn by the Cavaliers’ 1968 team that featured ACC Player of the Year Frank Quayle.

Not all of the jerseys will be game-worn. There are duplicate jersey numbers worn by players. In the case of duplicate game-worn jersey numbers, the players that wore specific jerseys will not be identified. The jerseys will be washed following the game and will be delivered in game-worn condition. Fans should allow three weeks for delivery.

Four jerseys – two featuring uniform number 1 and uniform numbers 3 and 24 will be auctioned online at VirginiaSports.com. Bidding for these jerseys will start at noon on Monday, Oct. 1. There will be a minimum bid of $200 per jersey. The auction bidding will close on Friday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m.

Proceeds from the sale of the jerseys will go back to the Virginia football program.

During the halftime ceremonies of Saturday’s game, Frank Quayle will be honored for his involvement with the Virginia football program as a student-athlete and then as a member of the school’s radio broadcast crew for 29 years. He will be presented a framed copy of his retro jersey. The members of the 1968 Virginia football team in attendance will join Quayle on the field for the recognition.

A native of Garden City, N.Y., Quayle rushed for 2,695 yards and caught 83 yards for 1,145 yards during his career. During the 1968 season, he rushed for 1,213 yards and caught 30 passes for 426 yards. In addition to being named the ACC’s Player of the Year, he also earned the league’s Athlete of the Year Award. Quayle also starred on the Virginia lacrosse team during his collegiate athletic career. Quayle’s number 24 is one of six numbers retired by the Virginia football program.

The retro Virginia game helmets will feature a special decal as a salute to Quayle.
