TULSA, Okla. – The Virginia men’s tennis team began play at the first major tournament of the fall as pre-qualifying of the ITA All-American Championships kicked off at the University of Tulsa. The Cavalier first-years were in action in the draw, with two advancing to the third round of pre-qualifying on Saturday.

Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 3 seed in the draw, had a first round bye before edging Brett Clark of North Carolina 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the second round.

Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.), the No. 13 seed, followed his first round bye with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Erick Reyes of Wichita State.

Jonathan Cornish (London, England) fell in his first round match to Alex Palaez of Illinois State, 7-6, 6-1.

The pre-qualifying draw concludes with the final two rounds on Sunday. There will be 16 players advance from pre-qualiying into qualifying, which begins Monday. The main draw begins Thursday.
