Lorton, Va. – Senior Mac McLaughlin and redshirt freshman Nick Tremps tied for fourth place to lead a group of three Virginia men’s golfers who competed at George Mason’s CHAMPS/Patriot Intercollegiate that concluded Sunday. McLaughlin and Tremps shot 1-under 212 at the par 71, 6,857-yard Laurel Hill Golf Course.

Freshman Nick McLaughlin made his collegiate debut at the event, shooting 5-over 218 to place 14th in the 81-player field. McLaughlin posted scores of 76, 72 and 70.

Mac McLaughlin’s score and finish equaled his previous best collegiate performances. He also shot 212 at the VCU Shootout last season. He was fourth at the 2010 Cavalier Classic in his only other top-10 showing. McLaughlin had rounds of 74, 70 and 68.

The tournament was the first in Tremps’ UVa career. He redshirted the 2011-12 season. Tremps posted back-to-back rounds of 72 on Saturday and fired a 3-under 68 Sunday.

Virginia returns to team competition Oct. 12-14 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn.
