LOS ANGELES – Virginia women’s tennis first-year Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) reached the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships during the final day of qualifying at the Riviera Country Club. She will begin play in the 32-player main draw on Thursday.

Elbaba reached the main draw with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over No. 81 Francesca Segarelli of Florida State. It marked the first time in six matches through pre-qualifying and qualifying that the Cavalier first-year dropped a set. It was also her third ranked win of the tournament.

In doubles qualifying, both Virginia teams came up short in their bid to reach the main draw. The team of Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) defeated Mary Clayton and Marianne Jodoin of Duke 8-3 in the second round of qualifying, but fell to Zoe Scandalis and Gabriella DeSimone of USC, 8-6, in the final round. The duo of Elbaba and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) suffered an 8-5 loss to Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic of Kansas State in the second round.
