USA Swimming Roster for FINA Short Course World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Former Virginia swimming standout and current volunteer assistant coach Matt McLean (Class of 2011) has been named to the United States’ squad for the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships, USA Swimming announced Wednesday (Oct. 3). The meet will be held in Istanbul, Turkey Dec. 12-16 at the Sinan Erdem Dome.

The meet will mark McLean’s first major international appearance since winning gold with the men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He won gold in the 200m free and 800m free relay at the 2011 World University Games and finished first in the 400m free and second in the 200m free at the 2011 ConocoPhillips National Championships.

The Sterling, Va., native graduated with a degree in sociology in 2011 and as one of UVa’s most decorated student-athletes. McLean won the 2011 NCAA Championship in the 500-yard freestyle and was a 15-time All-American at UVa. A 17-time Atlantic Coast Conference Champion, he was the ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
